Myanmar and China are planning to sign an agreement on exports of bananas between the two countries, a government official has announced.
This was revealed by deputy minister of Commerce U Aung Htoo during the sitting of the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) yesterday.
“Two experts from China recently conducted a field study in Myanmar regarding banana export and both countries intend to sign a memorandum of understanding for the official exports of bananas from Myanmar to China,” U Aung Htoo said.
Currently, some Chinese agri-businesses are growing tissue-cultures bananas in Kachin State and other areas for export to China.
China is the main market for agricultural products from Myanmar. Fruits, including watermelons and muskmelons, are already being exported to China besides the crops such as rice, maize and beans. U Aung Htoo added that officials in China say there is potential to export not only bananas but also other types of agricultural products to China.
“We have held talks with the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China for official exports of banana, avocado, pear, lime, pineapple, pomelo, roselle, cardamom, white jute, gum tragacanth, and elephant foot yam to China,” he said.
“As a result of the talks, roselle, cardamom, and elephant foot yam can be exported via ordinary trade channels after inspections. Gum tragacanth can also be exported to China as a dietary supplement after getting certification from China’s National Health Commission. As for the other crops, Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce has submitted answers to China’s customs authorities regarding pest risk analysis and are awaiting a response,” he said.
U Aung Htoo also revealed that the government is preparing to send more trade ambassadors to Europe, South America, and Africa.
“We are making arrangements to appoint economic attaches in Germany, Brazil, Australia, and South Africa, and adding more attaches for China” he said. Currently, Myanmar has 11 trade ambassadors overseas.
The economic attaches are responsible for market expansion of Myanmar’s products and services, collecting market data from trade partners, providing information on import policies, laws, rules, requirements for Myanmar businesses, reporting economic and policy developments in the countries where they are based, and promoting Myanmar as a trade partner.
