A new street was opened to mark Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 74th birthday in Maha Aung Myay township, Mandalay Region, on Wednesday on land owned by the Tatmadaw (military).

Mayor U Ye Lwin announced the new street on his internet page and said he wants it to be named after Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. However, the street will keep its original name of 38th Street, according to the Mandalay City Development Committee.

“I’m happy and proud that this street is able to be opened on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday. In my heart, I’ve dubbed it Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Street,” said U Ye Lwin.

The committee started negotiating in July 2017 to build 38th Street through military-owned land. The military decided in January 2018 to allow the street to be built on land owned by 76th Infantry Battalion.

The regional government permitted the asphalt road to built from east to west. It is 872 metres long, 24m wide and cost around K1.2 billion.

Mandalay has few east-west roads. In the past, people had to rely on 36th and 37th streets in the township, so the new road is expected to reduce traffic congestion and help develop the nearby community, the committee said.

“We have planted Gold Mohur trees along the road,” said Chief Minister U Zaw Myint Maung.

Local writer Su Nghet said, “Mandalay has traffic congestion in some places, like the train station or Mandalay University. The new road will reduce it, but there should be a 27th Street as well. The government should consider this.” – Translated
