YANGON-Yangon Heritage Trust yesterday gave its 32nd blue plague marking Yangon’s heritage to the over 100-year-old of Old Thitpok Tree (Tetrameles Nudiflora.R. Br. Datiscaceae) on the campus of Yangon University.

It was attended by the Education Minister Dr Myo Thein Gyi and Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein.

“When preparatory measures to hold a 1st Century of Yangon University are being carried out, significant old Thitpok Tree on the campus of Yangon University was awarded a blue plague by the Yangon Heritage Trust. I’m very glad. So, we and new generation need to maintain Yangon University where there has been old Thitpok tree,” said Yangon Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein.

Myanmar Marketing Research and Development Co;Ltd funded the research and production costs for installation of blue plaque at the old Thitpok tree.

Although it was very difficult to estimate the life of Thitpok tree, it had been on the campus since the founding of Yangon University in 1920.

Moreover, Thitpok tree became one of its most iconic features in conjunction with Convocation Hall, Judson Church, Inya Lake and the campus’ Kantkaw (ironwood) trees.

The plaques were installed at significant points around the city to commemorate and honor important heritage landmarks, events or people in the city.
