Mandalay – Water level in Ayeyawady River near Mandalay was declined under its low watermark during December and although it is now above 360 centimeters, which is its low watermark, it may decline again, according to Department of Meteorology and Hydrology for Upper Myanmar.

According to measurement made on January 14, the water level is reached to 376 centimeters and it may reach under its low watermark within three-day time.

Shallow water is making difficulty for navigation in the river and there are five constraint locations in the river between Mandalay and Nyaung-U, according to Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems.

“We instructed the vessels not to carry cargos above an allowed weight. We issued the deadweight tonnage for the time when water level is shallow. Water level in a port at Mandalay, where oil are being loaded, has not enough for vessels to dock,” said Kyaw Myint Than, Head of Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems for Mandalay Region.

The department will carry out to achieve adequate water depth to improve the navigation channel.
