The Yangon Hotel Expo 2019 will be held at Myanmar Expo hall in Thaketa Township October 18-20, according to statements by the organizer at a press conference held at Wyndham Grand Yangon Hotel on June 25.

U Tin Myint, President of the Myanmar Hotelier Association (Yangon), said: “This international hotel expo is meant to promote collaboration between international business partners, investors, and operators in Yangon through collective efforts by stakeholders in the industry. The number of tourists coming through Yangon International Airport is huge, but they usually only stay in Yangon for a day or so. Therefore, we will create tourist attractions in Yangon, such as historical sites, shopping areas, and other prominent spots. These will attract tourists to stay longer in Yangon.”

During the event, the organizers will include a variety of exhibitions for Myanmar tourism, local products, and places to visit in the city. Furthermore, there will be other programs to help people visit less well-known sites in Yangon, to try out the local cuisine, or to sight-see by riding the trains and buses as they make their circuit around the city.

Yangon Regional Government, under its vision of “Live, Work & Play”, is trying to fashion Yangon into a livable city with plenty of recreational areas and economic opportunities.

Naw Pan Thinzar Myo, the Regional Minister for the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism, boasted about recent accomplishments. He pointed out that a variety of beautiful parks, modern shopping centers, and great cinemas have all emerged in Yangon, while public transportation has continued to improve.

“We are trying to promote the image of Myanmar’s tourism hand-in-hand with local stakeholders in the tourism industry,”U Naing Win, Director General of the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism, said. “This show will present visitors with the opportunity to meet many business leaders at one place, and to enjoy the scene.”

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Hotels and Tourism –which had halted the star rating system for hotels back in 2012 –is now drafting the framework for a star rating system for hotels to increase the quality and standard of the services.

For the plans, the framework drafting committee will visit the hotels in Naypyitaw, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle, Ngapali, and Kawthoung, so that they can create a star rating framework that is compatible with the local hotel industry.

The number of tourists coming to this country between January and May 2019 is 781,726. This is an increase of 18,856 when compared with the same period last year. Most of the visitors are from Asia, followed by tourists from North America and Western Europe.
