Tatmadaw opposes proposal to transfer polling booths off bases 257

The Tatmadaw (military) is opposing a bill that would move polling booths outside military bases, especially in conflict zones, due to security considerations, said Brigadier General Zaw Min Tun of the Tatmadaw True News agency.

“Whether an election is held inside or outside of military bases needs to take into account the security of soldiers in conflict zones,” he said.

He said that military bases are located far from village tracts in conflict zones, so the security of the soldiers who will vote is important.

But Brig. Gen. Zaw Min Tun said the Tatmadaw will follow the Union Election Commission’s (UEC) ruling on the issue.

A bill submitted to the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) and Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) seeks to move polling precincts from inside military camps. The bylaw amendments are also for the consideration of regional and state hluttaws.

Any objections raised in the hluttaws will be directed to the UEC, which is set to decide on the issue soon.
